Composition of Vanilla

It is important to note that pure vanilla essential oil is not common , as the extraction of vanilla essence (Vanilla planifolia) is generally done by maceration in an alcohol or glycerol carrier to obtain a vanilla tincture.

Extracting a pure essential oil from vanilla is extremely complex and expensive.

Here are some of the main chemical components commonly found in vanilla essential oil:

  • Vanillin: This is the most abundant compound in vanilla. It gives vanilla its sweet, vanilla aroma . In addition to being used for its aromatic properties , vanillin has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
  • Vanillic Acid: It is a compound derived from vanillin. It also has antioxidant properties and can contribute to cellular protection against free radicals.
  • Eugenol: Found in vanilla, eugenol is a compound that has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antioxidant properties.
  • Coumarin: This is a compound found in vanilla that may have anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, in large doses, coumarin can be toxic, and its use should therefore be monitored.

Its benefits

Vanilla essential oil is less common than other essential oils, and it is often used more frequently as extracts or infusions in culinary preparations, perfumes, and personal care products.
